What a single tooth implant is
A single tooth implant is made of three parts: the implant (a titanium post placed in the jaw where the tooth root used to be), the abutment (a connector that sits on top of the implant), and the crown (the visible tooth, usually zirconia or porcelain fused to metal). Once healed, it looks and functions like a natural tooth and is cleaned with normal brushing and flossing.
Compared with a conventional three-unit bridge, an implant does not require cutting down the two adjacent teeth to act as supports. It also preserves the jawbone in that spot, because chewing forces are transmitted into the bone and stop it shrinking the way it does under a gap or a denture.
Who it suits β and who it may not
Usually a good candidate if you:
- Have a single gap with healthy teeth either side.
- Have enough healthy jawbone, or are willing to have a small graft.
- Have healthy gums and good oral hygiene.
- Are in reasonable general health and a non-smoker or willing to stop.
Extra caution or planning may be needed if you: smoke heavily, have poorly controlled diabetes, take certain bone medications (bisphosphonates), have had head or neck radiotherapy, grind your teeth, or have active gum disease that needs treating first. Growth is another factor β implants are generally deferred until the jaw has finished growing (usually late teens). None of these are automatic disqualifiers; they are reasons for a careful individual assessment.
Step by step
- 1. Assessment and CBCT scan The dentist checks the gap, gum health and bite, and takes a 3D scan to measure bone and locate the nerve or sinus.
- 2. Extraction if needed If the failing tooth is still present it may be removed, sometimes at the same visit as implant placement (immediate placement).
- 3. Implant placement Under local anaesthetic, the implant is inserted into the bone. This typically takes 30β60 minutes for one tooth.
- 4. Healing / osseointegration The bone fuses to the implant over roughly 8β12 weeks (lower jaw) to 3β6 months (upper jaw). A temporary tooth can sometimes be worn meanwhile.
- 5. Abutment and impression Once stable, an impression or digital scan captures the shape for the crown.
- 6. Crown fit The permanent crown is screwed or cemented on.
Materials and implant systems
The implant itself is usually commercially pure titanium or a titanium alloy; some clinics offer metal-free zirconia implants. Well-known implant systems you may see named include Straumann and Nobel Biocare (premium Swiss/Swedish systems), and Osstem and MegaGen (widely used value systems from South Korea). No single brand is universally "best" β what matters is that a reputable, traceable system is used, that you are told which one, and that its parts will be available for future maintenance wherever you live. Crowns are commonly monolithic zirconia or porcelain-fused-to-metal.
Healing and timeline
Most single-implant cases involve two trips if done abroad: one for placement and one, a few months later, for the crown β or a compressed protocol where a temporary is fitted early. Mild swelling, bruising and soreness for a few days after surgery are normal and usually controlled with ordinary painkillers. Full osseointegration before loading the implant with a final crown is what gives implants their high long-term success.
Risks and complications
Single implants are among the most predictable procedures in dentistry, but no surgery is risk-free. Possible issues include infection, implant failure to integrate (the implant does not fuse and must be removed and replaced later), nerve injury causing tingling or numbness in the lip or chin (mainly lower jaw), sinus problems (upper back teeth), and later peri-implantitis β a gum-and-bone infection around the implant, more likely in smokers and with poor hygiene. Mechanical issues such as a loose or fractured crown or screw can usually be repaired.
How it is typically approached in Turkey
Turkish clinics catering to international patients often plan single implants digitally from a CBCT scan and aim to minimise the number of trips. Some offer immediate placement and a temporary crown where the bone and bite allow. Ask directly which implant system is used, whether the crown is included in the quoted price, and how any warranty or follow-up would work once you are back home.

Is a single implant better than a bridge?
Each has trade-offs. An implant does not require grinding down the neighbouring teeth and helps preserve jawbone, and it often lasts longer. A bridge is quicker and may suit cases with weak bone or where the adjacent teeth already need crowns. The right choice depends on your specific mouth β a dentist should assess both options.
How long does a single tooth implant last?
With good hygiene and regular check-ups, implants have high long-term success and many last well over a decade, often much longer. The crown on top may need replacing sooner than the implant itself. Smoking and untreated gum disease are the biggest factors that shorten their life.
Does getting an implant hurt?
Placement is done under local anaesthetic so you should not feel pain during surgery. Afterwards, mild soreness, swelling and bruising for a few days are normal and usually managed with ordinary painkillers. Most people compare it to a tooth extraction.
How many trips to Turkey does one implant need?
