Dental crowns in Turkey

A dental crown is a cap that covers a whole tooth to restore its strength, shape and appearance. Crowns are used for teeth that are heavily filled, broken, root-treated or worn, and are made from ceramics such as zirconia or E-max, or metal-ceramic.

In short. A crown covers the entire tooth, unlike a veneer which covers only the front. Crowns are primarily a restorative treatment for damaged teeth, though they are also used cosmetically. Choosing to crown a healthy tooth removes a lot of tooth structure, so the reason for a crown matters.

What a dental crown is

A crown is a custom-made cap cemented over a prepared tooth. It restores a tooth that is too damaged for a filling, protects a tooth after root-canal treatment, or covers a dental implant. Crowns can also be used cosmetically to change shape or colour, though a veneer is usually the more conservative cosmetic choice for a healthy front tooth.

Zirconia and E-max are the ceramics most often offered in Turkey. The best material depends on the tooth position and bite forces, so a front crown and a molar may sensibly use different materials.

The procedure, step by step

  1. Assessment. Examination and X-rays confirm the tooth can support a crown; any decay or infection is treated first.
  2. Preparation. The tooth is reshaped under local anaesthetic to make room for the crown.
  3. Impression and temporary. A scan or impression is taken and a temporary crown fitted while the final is made.
  4. Fitting. The permanent crown is checked for fit, bite and colour, then cemented. Some clinics offer same-day CAD/CAM crowns milled on site.

Durability and aftercare

Crowns commonly last around 10–15 years and often longer, depending on the material, the bite and oral hygiene. The crown itself does not decay, but the natural tooth underneath can, so the margin where crown meets tooth must be kept clean with brushing and flossing. Regular check-ups, professional cleaning and a night guard for grinders all extend a crown's life. Avoid biting very hard objects.

Risks and things to weigh

The approach in Turkey

Crowns — especially zirconia — are among the most common restorations offered to international patients in Turkey, frequently with in-house CAD/CAM milling and short turnaround. Because “full set of crowns” packages are marketed heavily, confirm whether a crown is genuinely the right restoration for each tooth or whether a more conservative option (a filling, an onlay or a veneer) would do. Ask for the exact material, the guarantee, and aftercare arrangements. For pricing, see crowns and bridges cost in Turkey.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a crown and a veneer?

A crown covers the entire tooth and requires significant reshaping of the tooth, while a veneer covers only the front surface and removes far less structure. Crowns are mainly restorative — for broken, heavily filled or root-treated teeth — whereas veneers are usually a more conservative cosmetic option for healthy front teeth.

Which crown material is best for me?

There is no single best material. Zirconia is very strong and suits back teeth and bridges; E-max and layered ceramics look most natural and suit front teeth; porcelain-fused-to-metal is an older, still-used option. The right choice depends on the tooth's position and the forces on it, so a front tooth and a molar may use different materials.

How long do dental crowns last?

Crowns commonly last around 10 to 15 years and frequently longer, depending on the material, your bite, whether you grind your teeth, and how well the margin is kept clean. The crown does not decay, but the tooth beneath it can, so daily flossing around the crown and regular check-ups are important.

Does getting a crown hurt?

Preparation is done under local anaesthetic, so it is usually not painful at the time. Some sensitivity afterwards is normal and typically settles. Occasionally a heavily prepared tooth becomes irritated and may need root-canal treatment; tell your dentist about persistent pain.

Can a crowned tooth still get decay?

Yes. The crown itself cannot decay, but the natural tooth underneath, especially at the margin where the crown meets the gum, can develop decay if plaque builds up. Brushing, daily flossing around the crown, and regular professional cleaning are essential to keep the underlying tooth healthy.

Are same-day crowns as good as lab-made ones?

Same-day CAD/CAM crowns milled in the clinic can be excellent for many single crowns and save a second visit. Complex cases, certain aesthetics and multi-unit work may still benefit from a dental laboratory. Ask which method the clinic uses for your case and why.
